I know I am going to get in big trouble for posting this, but as many of you know I am a radical capitalist (I understand that the welfare state changes things..) and a strong believer in immigration reform.
I could write several pages on why the influx of immigrants (legal and illegal) into our nation is not only mutually beneficial for Americans and the immigrants themselves but entirely essential to the health of our economy.
However I am going to keep this short and just focus on the morality of the issue. Are we really going to go to the extent of kicking out hard working inhabitants of our land because they didn't follow the proper beaurocratic procedure at the borders? I fully understand the issue of securing our borders to supervise what comes in in respect to national security, I think we can all agree on that. However that does not require the burden and foolishness of rounding up the millions of people that are here working peacefully through mutual agreement with their employers.
One might argue that it is impossible to compete against illegal immigrants because they get paid under the counter which for legal citizens is almost impossible to do. Yes I agree I would like Americans to be able to compete and not have the government hindering our ability to do so, but I do not see us ditching the minimum wage anytime soon so why not try to pass legislation that can actually solve this problem? And no not legislation that is affront to human intelligence, legislation that actually fixes the problem with our borders and doesn't require a massive relocation of 18 million people.
I am sick and tired of people saying "They broke the law, allowing them to stay means you are rewarding crime". Since when have Americans obeyed crappy laws? Yes, our nation was founded on rule of law The Constitution of the United States. However we were born from civil disobediance and all out revolution to a government that had laws we did not agree with. We were breaking British law when we signed the declaration of independance however that didn't stop us. Abolitionists are praised for their courage to defy the law and harbor runaway slaves, their amnesty would be considered virtuous in most peoples eyes. You would most likely agree that if you were in their shoes you would break the law as they did, and would probably welcome pardon from your government. Is that not rewarding people who break the law? Is that not contributing to anarchy? No, because its a bad law, and believe it or not so is our immigration policy. Thats why we need the proper legislation to fix our border problem and simultaneously make sure to not isolate us from the world.
While the comparisons I have made are a bit extreme, the principle is the same.
If you were trying to feed yourself or in most cases your family, and the $5 a day in mexico wasn't enough to put bread in your child's mouth, would you come across the border? Yes, although you will probably say "Yeah I would but I would come over legally"... Well I don't know much about biology and human metabolism, but I do know that it takes several years under current immigration policy to have even a chance at coming into the United States legally, and I think thats a bit of a stretch when you have children who need to eat something.
So I ask all of you who oppose some sort of worker program and path to citizenship for the people who are already here or those who want to come here, to please pull your heads out and see what its like to breath the fresh air of reality. Immigration Reform is long overdue, and building the Great Wall of America isn't going to solve the problem.
Ok.... Bring on the pain... I'm ready

Ominous.
is real, and has yet to be fully understood.
My understanding is that it is an end to the middle class---- the forces that created the middle class in this country, namely collective bargaining and unionization, have lost all their potency now that borders are meaningless and factories can be moved to slave labor countries
Basically the middle class came into being by holding the wealthy hostage in a sense and the wealthy have finally slipped free from their grasp
Globalization is the revenge of the elite --- and will probably end up resembling feudalism
Of course new opportunities will present themselves as well and those remain to be seen..
Gail,
While I can appreciate your passion on the subject, I think your arguments are skewed. I mean, on the basis of your stance, one could reasonably argue a case that illegal immigrants might one day take a stand against the oppressed tyranny of the American government and revolt -- to claim the land for their own. They already have no regard for American law (as you sated, their first act of coming into this country was lawless), so is it not reasonable to believe they wouldn't have any regard for the laws of secession either?
For years, I have reaped the benefit of the illegal immigrants' work. I don't pick my own grapes or strawberries. I have never climbed onto (or subsequently fallen off of) my roof. I have never had tar or asphalt under my fingernails, and I have never risked my life "beautifying" the medians of our country's highways. Having said that, I can appreciate all of the work performed by illegal immigrants, but I do not appreciate the manner by which they usurp those jobs from Americans who have become too proud to accept low wages, yet are humble enough to accept government aid. In essence, their desires to seek a "better life" have been detrimental to the American way of life. How much better do they have it when their daily lawless actions and under-the-table work do nothing but create a more poverished nation to which they fled?
I hate that this is going to sound like this being aimed at Mexicans, but let's face it, the reality is that it does appear to be where the most rampant influx is from. My biggest gripe is the manner by which government and corporations have abandoned the American way of life, abandoned assimilation practices, and have done nothing short of catering and pandering to them. Democrats use social and liberal programs to draw them to their side using empathy (as if any of those elitists have ever picked a damn olive). Republicans create a vile image, yet continue to reach across party lines to create the same draw. I don't appreciate it when my favorite product has English on one side and Spanish on the other -- and moreso, I don't appreciate those who purposefully rotate products to ensure the Spanish side is forward facing. I don't appreciate hearing any instructions in Spanish on a phone call to a business (Here's an idea - make it a silent option so when a Spanish speaking illegal calls the number, they automatically know to press "9" for Spanish menu optins). I don't appreciate seeing OUR American flag being flown upside down or below the Mexican flag, and I don't appreciate their marches for mexican revolution and rights on the streets of our American cities.
Do we round them all up? That's very impractical.
Do we need a method of control? Absolutely!
Without control, then we, as a nation will continue to see an erosion of the borders surrounding our great land and sovereignty. We will blend into obscurity as a society, and we will be forced to accept the North American Union and subsequent New World order that the acceptance of this kind of lawless act will ultimately lead to.
Ahhh, but perhaps it is destiny or the will of God. Maybe the prophecy in Revelation contains more truth and merit than some would like to admit. Maybe we are just delaying the inevitable -- who am I to question God almighty anyhow right? I'm just one tiny speck in the microcosm of all things that are.
If it makes sense for hungry Mexicans to act in their own interest
why does it seem foolish for hungry Americans to act in their own interest?
Also, what do you propose to the middle class or working poor who will be unable to compete for the lower paying jobs? Of course I don't mean gov't programs. I'm just wondering if you have any suggestions or words of encouragement for them?
I guess the free market has an answer---- open up a prison supply company!
Your proposed immigration reform would certainly create a perverse incentive for every
Latin-American woman of breeding age to have as many offspring as possible, so some
could come here and work at the jobs Americans can't afford to do at substandard wages
while still abiding by housing regulations and child support rulings and paying taxes and
vehicle insurance, thus ensuring her luxurious retirement.
We need to secure our border, like any country. We need to investigate visa overstays. We need
to penalize employers who knowingly hire them. We need to do deportations and exact penalties
on second offenses. I'm not saying we have to round up everyone, only create a strong
disincentive for continuing the current practices.
The problem is not immigration but uncontrolled immigration. The rate of immigration is what
needs to be controlled. We could find in 2010 that the population is 900 million, and that 600
million of that don't speak English. Then what will we do? The answer is, "All become
impoverished peasants." We're well on our way as it is.
The whole problem emanates from the central banks and their support for the little oligarchies
that rule Latin America. Clean up that problem world wide and immigration, legal or not,
becomes a non-issue.
I would be interested to read what you think about this:

The immigration problem is nothing more than one of capacity. Nothing else matters other than this, and the Gumballs video makes this vivid.

Unfortunately Google videos conflict with my machine. Perhaps I'm not the only one.
The immigration problem is nothing more than one of capacity?
Would somebody please make this vivid using text?
I see the current problem as pressure for a willful lack of enforcement exerted by the
puppeteers of government, David Rockefeller et al. They find a strong constituency
among the corporate predators on society desiring a ready source of cheap labor,
especially one so easily exploited, and among Democrats, hoping to develop a new
membership base after that exploitation has led to its inevitable denouement.
By tolerating illegal immigration, we're working toward the objectives of the oligarchy
of this country and those of the immigrants' countries of origin. It is part of a larger
effort to eliminate America's middle class, and with it the broad distribution of education
that feeds the impulse toward freedom in society at large, and substitute for it a
bloated new class of slaves to facilitate life for the elites.
