Survival USA!, a solutions-based forum shares preparedness info for all of life's challenges, emergencies and catastrophic events such as: Hurricane/flood/earthquake, Food/fuel/water shortages, Death of a loved one, Family Problems/Divorce, Illness/depression, Crime, Financial Problems, Martial law.
The goal is to state the challenge and as a collective, find solutions. Rather than wallowing in the problems, we focus on problem-solving, making this a more constructive forum.
A myriad of topics apply; health, parenting, eliminating debt, safety/security, growing/canning food, how to get off the grid/living independently, the role of faith, etc .
We can't count on our government to take care of us in a crisis. We need to be self-sufficient and continue to wake others up so they too may be prepared for life's uncertainties.
Like the author, Robert Fulghum wrote in his book, "All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten"
"...we need to hold hands and stick together as we cross the street."
Be healthy. Be safe. Be well. Be prepared and share the info.

I feel sorry for the big city dwellers that don't see it coming and wouldn't know how to prepare if they did. A storm's brewin' and I'm afraid that for some of them, their only perceived resolution to the predicament they are going to find themselves in will be riots and looting.
God bless,

Arctic Doomsday Seed Vault Opens Feb 26, 2008
Drilled into permafrost and protecting millions of seeds of the world from catastropic events, the Doomsday Seed Vault sits 500 miles from the North Pole. The vault is owned by Norway but guess who is forking over the cash? What do they know that we don't know?

10 day survival kit for the car for under $25
By Jeffrey Yago, P.E., CEM
From backwoodshome magazine
It seems like every winter there are news stories of people getting stranded for weeks in bad weather while driving through the many remote areas of our country. In fact, this past winter, our nation held its breath waiting for news of James Kim and his family who got lost traveling the snowy roads of Josephine County in Oregon, not far from where this magazine is published. While his wife and daughters, who stayed with their vehicle, were eventually found alive, he succumbed to the cold as he hiked through snow looking for help for his family. And there are also many cases of people trapped for days in their vehicles after skidding over a bridge embankment, even though they were only a few hundred feet from a busy highway.
I have written many articles about how to prepare your home for a power outage or national emergency, but today I want to address how to be prepared for an emergency when traveling in your car or truck.

One method of building a water recovery system I have used while survival camping in the Big Bend National Park is this:
) Find an area here there is plenty of plant life, I found a small washout. The soil should have some dampness. It doesn't need to be wet, just slightly moist.
) Dig a hole about 10" in diameter and about the same depth. I used my knife for this.
) Place a cup or other container in the center of the hole.
) Lay a piece of plastic across the top of the hole and seal the edges with some of the material removed from the hole.
) Place a small pebble in the center, over the cup.
) Take a nap. This should be done during the heat of the day when it's too hot for activity anyway. You can also forage for food during this time.
) After a couple of hours there should be water in the cup that is safe to drink.
Note: Adding crushed leaves or cactus to the bottom of the hole will add more moisture.
If you are in an area where there is a heavy Dew you can stretch a tarp over a frame made of sapling poles and elevated. Place a container under the center and drop a pebble in the center of the tarp. Poke a small hole there. Dew Water will collect on the tarp and run to the center and drip into the container. You'll be surprised as to the volume you get if it is a heavy Dew. The tarp can also be used simultaneously as an impromptu shelter.
Conversely the tarp can be stretched at an angle forming a "lean To" curl up the lower edge to form a trough with one end higher than the other. Place a container at the low end to collect the water.
The only bad thing about an distiller is that it looses its energy structure during the process. Unless recharged via crystals, sunlight, or geometry alignments. Even if energy structure is raised, there is still a lack of nutrients. Maybe look into gravity filters. I have a big berky, love it, and is clean pure filtered water that I can then take and energize, and then bring right to freezing, which further structures the vibratory levels of the water....
Peace.
What a great topic!
I would highly suggest everyone buying the Foxfire series. The books go into detail about old/lost trades such as log cabin building, blacksmithing, bee-keeping, glass blowing, tanning, etc. etc. etc.
Also, I have quite a bit of experience in indoor gardening (which would be of great importance if martial law and food rationing develop) because your outdoor gardens would either be raided by the police for food or thieves who can't get their rations.
If you are interested in indoor gardening or need any advice about plants, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Consider Joining Texas_Self_Sufficiency: Home Grown Self Sufficiency.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas_Self_Sufficiency/
This is the organizational page for Texas_Self_Sufficiency workshops.
We are a group promoting and educating for self sufficiency.
Things have become somewhat uncertain in our time. The national politics are corrupt, our infrastructure is failing, the value of our money is in the toilet, food and energy shortages are on the horizon. The signs of uncertainty, decay, and depression are all around us. There is less than 2 weeks of food warehoused in this country, energy costs are insane, inflation and it's sister deflation are nibbling at the fabric of our society. Katrina epitomized the ineptitude of our governmental safety nets. We have no where to turn in an emergency or truly hard times. Who will you depend on if hard times or emergency strikes?
In a time when all appearances indicate that we are alone there is the hope of small communities of those who have chosen to be self reliant. They focus on learning how to provide the necessities of life for themselves and their small community.
Here you will find such a community. Strangers have come together to exchange knowledge, expertise, services and a common spirit to re-establish the core of civility, self reliance.
We hold workshops to teach and learn alternate energy, gardening, food storage, skills, crafts, trades, healing, fellowship, and other skills to thrive under times of hardship and the failure of society.
So you are welcome to learn and teach here with the rest of us who are groping through the fog for direction.
Occasionally someone may offer to sell or otherwise provide materials and equipment and as long as it is on subject thats fine. We don't want a lot of spam however. Spammers will be warned and on repeated offenses will be banned.
We also encourage Civility in dealing with each other. This is a close knit community and who know, if things get bad enough some of us may end up living together. So lets be friends.

I give self sufficiency classes at my farm on Sundays.....
My sister and I (twins) are your age....and recently purchased 42 acres of mostly pasture land with 11 acres of this wooded,- a natural spring - all on a hill. This was never developed for a residance and has been hayed for some years. It appears we will have to do much of everything ourselves - a home, barn, fencing ...- but I can't wait to actually get started - kind of scarry but we have to do it. I am enrolling in a biodynamic agriculture course and plan to teach this on our completely self sustained homestead - everything we earn is going into this - we grew up on a farm but both work outside of farming now and hope to get totally out of the rat race soon and back to our roots!! We share your dream!
"I give self sufficiency classes at my farm on Sundays....."
Let me clarify.
They are free and we encourage the participants to share their knowledge.
We cover: gardening, food storage, alternate energy, alternate home construction, target practice, and what ever the participants would like to cover.
I would be interested. Please send info by private mail via our meetup. Thanks. I look forward to it, if not this Sunday, maybe next. I appreciate you giving back to your community like this.

Great meeting at Windstalker's yesterday! He and his wife were kind to have us.
Now here are my ideas and input...
I believe these kind of workshops should be started all over the country. Maybe have them once a month or every 2 weeks. Bring in the people who remember what it was like to live off the land. Put folks to work on your property and have them "do" while you teach (benefits you too and your wife will be happy the honey-do list is getting done). Maybe form a food co-op where everyone works the land and shares in the bounty.
Maybe host a weekend workshop where everyone brings their tent, and spends a work-weekend learning and doing (ever repaired a fence, or gathered eggs warm from a chicken's butt? Work weekends would give a much needed opportunity to learn while helping the owner of the land. Could even ask for a small donation to cover cost of AC/utilities/food, etc.
Yesterday we learned about putting food up, we picked delicious blackberrys, learned about "stackable" potato farming, and many other things. Being we live in hurricane country, It will be good to learn how to be self-sufficient. Anyone interested in these topics who lives in SE Texas should visit Windstalker. Next meeting in 2 weeks. (oh and he HAS the Foxfire books!)
I have offered free yoga classes for any work weekends to draw people in and help with any soreness from doing work the participants are not used to. Maybe your group members could offer services at your work weekends.
Sharing the knowledge/work and fellowship =survival. Go and break bread together. Get to know one another. If there is a crisis, you'll be glad you took the time.
Please keep us posted of any progess on forming your groups. If we can make videos of what we're learning and post them here and on YouTube, we can reach even more of the masses.

For the weekend of May 17th - 18th we are considering a solar water heater workshop. More details will be available as they develop.
As usual we are open to suggestions.
If anyone has a digital video camera it would be very useful for this workshop. Then we could post the workshop to you tube.

A free restorative hatha (Christian) yoga class will be offered as a way to help with the stress and aches/pains of living in these stressful times. Class will be outdoors. Bring a mat, comfortable clothing to stretch in, bottles water and a towel. I'll be gentle with you. My oldest client is 100.
For the workshop, bring work gloves and some jeans, more water, t-shirt, bandana or hat and sunscreen. Windstalker may have us plant stackable potatoes or give us some other hands-on opportunities in the garden. Bring containers for blackberries and a notebook/pen. I'd like to hear about alternative energy sources too.
Come and share your knowledge.

There's plenty of room around the big pond for tents.
I also have a very nice BBQ pit where we can prepare meals.
As summer approaches I'd like to spend more time on alternate energy workshops.
I'm also always open for suggestions.

The only thing GMO foods have caused are more illness and greater profits to those with a vested interest. As I mentioned in another post, the FDA has given approval for rice implanted with a human gene to be marketed to unsuspecting consumers. Even Uncle Ben must be turning over in his grave.

Science is holding up GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) as the savior to the food shortages. I'll be posting lists of some GMO's soon. I was fooled recently by Uncle Ben's rice.
I buy organic foods (esp. brown rice) now.

Radical Science Aims To Solve Food Crisis

Scientists are pondering a new "green revolution," half a century after the first one, to solve a growing food shortage that has reached crisis proportions in some countries.
American consumers are experiencing the trickle-down effects of the lack of food. People in Haiti, Mexico, Guinea, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Yemen and other countries have taken to the streets in recent weeks and months to protest the rising costs of food. An official with the World Food Program yesterday called it a "silent tsunami" of world hunger.

Survival is the first law of Man. Now is a good time to learn more on this subject and I recommend that you start looking for veterans who have gone to many survival schools, or had to survive under extreme circumstance.
This will accomplish many things such as, it gives vets a sense of appreciation that hollow words will never fill. You have the advantage of talking with someone who has "been there" instead of someone who spouts much verbiage, but in reality only wants your money. You get to learn many skills "hands on" which is the only way some folks can learn. You can ask questions and get answers immediately, instead of trying to look up answers in an index.
I'm not knocking survival links, some of the above are really informative. It just makes sense to utilize a valuable resource that is mostly free, and learn skills that can be applied in time of war or "civil unrest".
If you wait too long, at least find out who the real vets are in your neighborhood so you will know who to run to when the poop is in the wind.
"Peace, through superior firepower."
The Self Sufficient link there is really good!
I am growing my own vegetables this season, which I am really excited about.
There are excellent videos on Youtube for urban gardening, such as making raised beds on roof tops, etc. I had a playlist, but it seems to have disappeared. I'll post a link to it when I recreate it.
I walk around my neighborhood at times and wonder why people with gardens waste all that space on grass. Raised beds are attractive and easy to maintain and you get something useful out of them.
I've recently gotten involved with a group of people here, that are trying to raise awareness to the subject of "growing your own" and one of our main topics was using what land you have available to work for you.
I'm not against green lovely sprawling gardens, by no means. I just think that the land could be put to better use and the satisfaction of growing your own is fantastic!
Edited to add: Do a searchon Youtube for: GardenGirltv She's great - and for you guys - not bad to look at! ;)
I checked out the web sites GardengirlTV and YouGrowGirl (Thank You!) and was inspired to put in a HUGE bed in my front yard. In it I planted flowers and some veggies. Now I'll start the back yard with raised beds and dwarf fruit trees that I can maintain without killing my back.
I bought myself a swing to sit out front (Mother's day gift for myself). I love sitting out there late at night and look at the trees, stars and flowers. I could even hear a hoot owl. The front yard feeds my soul. Back yard feeds my body.
In these uncertain and stressful times, I think it's imperative to have a special place to go (even a closet!) where there is no work calling to be done, no kids crying or cocky teenagers arguing, no news to trouble your mind...just you, God and peace. If we don't take the time to charge our battery, we'll burn out (A message from your Yoga Therapist ).
