When it's cold and dark, your friendly bureaucrat will be there
Eyes stinging, lungs wheezing, allergies rampant, filth covering everything? There's a solution which has a proven track record in France where 80% of their energy is derived from this source.
I support nuclear power, and so does the founder of Green Peace who now blames his fellow environmentalists for opposing nuclear for so long. He blames them for confusing nuclear power with nuclear weapons. Nuclear is cheap. Uranium comes from friendly stable countries and has no greenhouse gasses. The waste technology for recycling leaves little with which to deal. With a solid nuclear program, we could all be driving battery operated cars and breathing clean air in Los Angeles.
I oppose ethanol which is nothing more than a payoff to the big agricultual barrons. Burning food has just driven up the price of food and is destroying valuable arable land. Who are the loonies that go along with this boondoggle?
Coal gassification is a lower priority in my book, becasue we're still burning fuel.
It's time to get real, and quit paying off special interests.

In the words of (unpopular here but nonetheless) Ted Turner
"Nuclear energy may kill us but we know that coal energy will kill us"
