Things Went Smoothly Last Week in Illinois
Here's a press release we put out from the Stevo for Congress campaign a few days ago. It sounds like the other FreedomSlate08 candidate in Illinois is having some great success as well.
Highwood Resident Joins Race in Tenth
Highwood resident Allan Stevo has submitted his paperwork and petitions to the Illinois State Board of Elections, to run as a candidate for US House in the 10th Congressional District of Illinois.
Stevo will be running as an Independent, not tied to either of the two major parties and not tied to a smaller party.
"George Washington warned of the mess that political parties would cause and has been proven right. He believed that nothing should come between a representative and his or her constituents. Parties, like lobbyists, encourage politicians to ignore the will of their constituents," said Stevo.
Ballots were turned in to the Illinois State Board of Elections in Springfield. Under Illinois law, Stevo was not permitted to file as an independent until after June 15.
"We actually needed more than 15 times the signatures needed by the Republican candidate in the race. 15 times! It's hard for you to call that a level playing field when Independent candidates have a much harder time getting on the ballot," said ballot access coordinator, Igor Mikka. "You would not believe how often we heard from people how shocked they were that we needed in excess of 10,000 valid signatures. That's a total shock when you compare that to the 600 signatures needed by the republican and the 1,001 signatures needed by the democrat."
Stevo will be running on a platform of greater personal freedom, greater economic freedom, lower taxes, and a non-interventionist foreign policy. "Washington just ought to be following the Constitution," said Stevo. "I know that a lot of politicians are dishonest, but it's just plain dirty to take an oath of office to uphold the Constitution and then to act entirely contrary to the Constitution. That document is the rule that Washington is supposed to be playing by – no undeclared wars, innocent until proven guilty, no searches without probable cause, everyone gets his or her day in court, small central government, independent state governments, government that protects the rights of the people. There are some very dissatisfied voters in the district who realize that our American way of life is under attack by the very politicians who claim to be protecting it."
"Generally, congressional elections are not vigorously contested, and even when they are, the dialogue is so restricted that the electorate get no sense for the issues from the candidates. This year, the voters of the 10th District are getting a real treat that most Americans aren't privy to – a vigorous campaign where a non-partisan candidate will be widening the scope of debate," said Mikka.
Stevo, when asked why he's decided to run responded "We've either got to get more involved, or to stop caring so much about what's going on in DC. I'm not ready to give up yet, and I don't want the frustration that comes with sitting home and doing nothing. I want to get out there, as an American, and ask both of these men the tough questions that they don't get asked. We will never have the government we want unless we engage the government we have. We won't have the leaders we want unless more of us get off the couch and run ourselves."
The 10th Congressional District of Illinois forms a rectangular shape. The district goes from Wilmette, up the shores of Lake Michigan to Waukeegan, west to Graslake and south to Palatine.
Stevo, 28, is a teacher and writer by trade, a University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, alumnus, the author of three books on culture and politics. He has worked actively in politics and in better government projects. To learn more about the campaign or to get more involved, please visit www.StevoForCongress.com.
