Renewable Energy, and our Eternal Debt
I've received a few chain letters from constituents looking for answers to whether I will "invest now in renewable energy and commit to fully funding the Green Jobs Act and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant." once elected. I sent the following as a response:
I personally believe that we have, as a nation, done more to ourselves to hamper our
energy problems than the oil industry is capable of. We require, as a nation, over 20
million barrels of oil, a day. We cannot legislate our way out of that, it has to come
from every individual, and it will not happen by force. De-regulating the process to
refine more oil, and get more oil from ourselves than OPEC, who tightly control the
worlds oil supply, will go a long way to relieving the pressure on our nation.
I understand that these represent 'dirty' energy sources, and that great change has to,
and will, happen to get rid of them. Great strides have been taken, on the private level
to develop pure electric cars, and hybrid cars, and solar panels are becoming more and
more efficient every year. This is to be commended, especially because, for the most
part, it is happening without mandate. Companies are seeing the profit that can be made
in supplying cheap, renewable energy, and that we, as American consumers are glad to buy
these products as they appear. Take, for example, how long the wait-list remains every
year to buy hybrid cars, despite production numbers increasing exponentially every year.
To answer your original question though, I would vote against the $125 Million per year
Green Jobs Act and the $2 Billion per year Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block
Grant. As a country deeply in debt, and only getting worse, we as a nation need to spend
less, not more. Our first commitment is to the future generations, and spending billions
more will only do more harm than good.

Nicely stated, David. I have a response that is similar on my website blog at www.JamesSmack.com, for those who wish to read it and comment there. Thanks for adding this David, and good luck in your campaign.
