Global warming can't be blamed for the trifecta -- headed toward the Southeast U.S. -- meteorologists say. It's just 'peak season in an active hurricane cycle.'

Ocean temperatures are forecast to rise 2 to 6 degrees over the next century, and each 1-degree increase boosts hurricane severity by 1%. In the worst-case scenario, storms could get about 5% stronger, he said.

"Put it in the context of a Category 5 hurricane," Landsea said. "If before greenhouse gas emissions it would have been 150 mph, then 100 years from now maybe it'll be 157 mph. That's a pretty small change."
