The Black Death has reportedly killed at least 40 al-Qaeda operatives in North Africa. The disease, which struck Europe in the Middle Ages killing more than 25 million people, has swept through a training camp for insurgents in Algeria.

The group now fears the highly-infectious disease could have spread to other al-Qaeda training camps or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, the paper said.

It's very comforting to know

Obama: Send 2 more brigades to Afghanistan ( click here )
The proposed force increase — about 7,000 troops — is part of Obama's plan to pull combat troops out of Iraq and focus on the growing threat from a resurgent al-Qaida in Afghanistan.

"As president, I would pursue a new strategy, and begin by providing at least two additional combat brigades to support our effort in Afghanistan," Obama said in an op-ed published Monday in The New York Times, a day before he plans a speech here on his vision for Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Iraq is not the central front in the war on terrorism, and it never has been."

‘Afghanistan could be Obama’s Vietnam’
By Our Special Correspondent
LONDON, Feb 11: Unless the insurgents’ advance is halted, Afghanistan will become President Barack Obama’s Vietnam, fears Col John Nagl, a consultant. ( click here )

The Telegraph report cleverly juxtaposed Col Nagl’s assessment with a statement by Adm Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in which he had said that he expected to announce the deployment of a further 30,000 US troops soon, even though President Obama’s administration was waiting to evaluate the reviews.

Black Death
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Black Death, or the Black Plague, also known as the Bubonic Plague, was one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, widely thought to have been caused by a bacterium named Yersinia pestis (Plague) but recently attributed by some factors to other diseases. ( click here )

The European economy entered a vicious circle in which hunger and chronic, low-level debilitating disease reduced the productivity of labourers, and so the grain output was reduced, causing grain prices to increase. This situation was worsened when landowners and monarchs such as Edward III of England (r. 1327–1377) and Philip VI of France (r. 1328–1350), out of a fear that their comparatively high standard of living would decline, raised the fines and rents of their tenants.[31] Standards of living then fell drastically, diets grew more limited, and Europeans as a whole experienced more health problems.

The three forms of plague brought an array of signs and symptoms to those infected. The septicaemic plague is a form of "blood poisoning," and pneumonic plague is an airborne plague that attacks the lungs before the rest of the body. The classic sign of bubonic plague was the appearance of buboes in the groin, the neck, and armpits, which oozed pus and bled. Most victims died within four to seven days after infection.

Such a sweet combination (of homelessness, destitution, joblessness, hunger) coming down the pipeline...

Prevention Of Leishmaniasis

Prevention Of Leishmaniasis Transmission Through Prevention Of Bites By Sand Flies
Main Category: Tropical Diseases
Also Included In: Infectious Diseases / Bacteria / Viruses
Article Date: 30 Mar 2007 - 13:00 PDT ( click here )

Because a female sand fly can lay millions of eggs and because insect resistance to pesticides is increasing, eradication of sand flies to date has met with little success. There are 30 species of sand flies that are known to transmit leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease by a protozoan (Leishmania sp.) through the bite of the female sand fly. When the female sucks the blood from an infected individual, it takes in the protozoa which develop during a period of 4 to 25 days inside the sand fly. The infectious female sand fly will then take a blood meal from another person and the painful sting will inoculate the new victim with the Leishmania protozoa, thus completing the cycle.

In mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, the disease leads to the destruction of mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and throat causing disfigurement and disability in the victim. The fatal form of this disease is visceral leishmaniasis or kala azar and is characterized by anemia, swelling of the spleen and liver, bouts of fever and weight loss. Death occurs in 100% of the cases within two years if no medical intervention is available.

Over 90% of leishmaniasis cases are found in Brazil, Sudan, Syria, Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq. In the city of Kabul in Afghanistan alone 67,500 people contracted this debilitating disease in 2004. After 20 years of war, Afghanistan's infrastructure and insect control programs were destroyed. The ruins of the country also became excellent breeding grounds for sand flies.

Deja Vu is a Cognitive Disease in the Battlefields of One's Mind

The Napoleon Graves
A mass grave in Vilnius sheds light on a catastrophic military campaign that changed the course of Europe.

By Michael Tarm ( click here )

Napoleon was in control of nearly all continental Europe when he invaded Russia in June, 1812. Marching into Lithuania bound for Moscow, his 500,000-man army—a sea of infantry, grenadiers and artillery cannons—seemed invincible. It was the largest single invasion force ever assembled.
One secret to Napoleon’s earlier triumphs was that his army could move much more quickly than opposing militaries—by carrying fewer provisions and by living off conquered territories as they went.

Tellingly, virtually none of the bones showed signs of blunt trauma that could have come from cannon shrapnel, bullets or bayonet stabs, suggesting those buried in the trenches didn’t die of war wounds.
Many of the skeletons were found in a tight, curled-up posture, a poignant sign—even across two centuries—of the human suffering. People who die of exposure tend to assume a fetal position in their final minutes, according to Barkus.

“What killed these men was cold, starvation and disease,” he concluded.
And why did none have signs of battle wounds from recent engagements?
“The explanation’s quite simple really,” said Barkus. “Anyone who was wounded even slightly fighting the Russians died quickly en route from Moscow. Only the relatively healthy made it this far, then died here.

An absence of obvious wounds also appears to discount some French accounts that blood-thirsty Cossacks swept upon the ailing soldiers, hacking them to death with their sabers.

DNA tests are being done to try to determine whether an unusually large proportion of the soldiers, as some historians contend, died of typhus—a lice-born disease that typically plagued armies of the age.

So, when our nation's young men and women get sent over to foreign lands, Big Guv'ment will discover that a mysterious disease had somehow migrated back to the United States. The state can prevent Mad Cow and Foot-and-Mouth diseases from infesting the U.S. cattle industry after spending millions of tax moneys. But somehow, the U.S. populace will inadvertently contract some foreign agent.

Sounds fishy...

Barack Bonaparte: Obama's Afghan Scheming Could Lead to a Disaster of Napoleonic Proportions
by Ali Eteraz, July 21, 2008

It would perhaps behoove Senator Obama to look at some of the ways the current Afghan insurgency uses the Afghan geography to its advantage:

- Recently US and UK forces captured one stash of Taliban heroin worth nearly two billion dollars going out from an Iranian port.

- Before that, an investigation by the Independent UK discovered that the Taliban are going to the northern border to purchase weapons directly from the Russians.

- Simultaneously an investigation by the NYTimes revealed that the Taliban have taken control of the marble mines in Pakistan's tribal areas.

Historically, issues of geography have perhaps been at forefront of any military planning with respect to Afghanistan, but with Senator Obama, they barely register.

For someone who previously disparaged the Iraq war as a "dumb war" and a "rash war" his suggestions about increasing troop presence in Afghanistan is a mistake. It is the sort of thing that led Napolean Bonaparte to destroy France.
But perhaps the only thing worse than Senator Obama's ideas are those of Senator McCain. No doubt dueling with his opponent, he recently announced that under his plan the US will commit even more troops to Afghanistan than it would under Senator Obama's plan.
