Across the nation, people are beginning to reconsider our marijuana laws. In 2006, America set a new record by arresting over 800,000 individuals for marijuana offenses; 89% of these arrests were for simple possession only. Marijuana remains as available as ever through an unregulated illegal market. Enforcement of marijuana laws costs taxpayers billions of dollars each year – precious public safety resources that could be directed toward more important priorities and more effective policies.

“Marijuana: It’s Time for a Conversation” invites viewers to consider whether these laws are working for us or against us.

* What does marijuana law enforcement cost us in tax dollars?
* How effective is prohibition at controlling marijuana use and availability?
* What are the social consequences of marijuana prohibition?
* Are the consequences of marijuana arrests and convictions fair? Are the laws applied fairly to all Americans?
* How did we end up with these laws in the first place?
* Is marijuana prohibition doing more harm than good?

Sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and featuring noted travel writer and television host Rick Steves,
“Marijuana: It’s Time for a Conversation” begins a long-overdue public discussion about marijuana and marijuana prohibition.

Rick Steves is amazing

First, thanks for posting the links and writing this article.

Second, for a guy who comes off as ultra nerdy in his PBS travel shows, Rick Steves is a phenomenal pro-cannabis speaker. I had the pleasure of attending a NORML conference wherein he was the keynote speaker. This guy knows his stuff and comes off as super intelligent. I guess it helps when his perspective is from someone who has studied the European's take on so-called "soft drugs" on hundreds of trips for his travel documentaries. Plus, he is a husband and father and really has credibiltiy when it comes to the dreaded "what if my kids ask me if I have ever done pot" type questions.

He has also authored scores of OpEd's (mainly in and around Seattle) in support of cannabis reform and is a proud member of NORML. Which we should all join (its like $25.00 a yr people!).

Funny- now that a few more states are having ballot intitiatives dealing with marijuana, you will see more and more of these:

Headline: Marijuana May Shrink Parts of Brain

When will the governments of the world give it up??? They keep fighting the battle but the war was lost before it began.

Thanks again for posting this.

The same measure was voted on state wide ballot. It lost to a 60% to 40%. Them good old news channels stated that it failed massively. lol lol lol failing massively to me is like 90% to 10%
