Type of Content: Article I got an e-mail from Barry Cooper yesterday and thought I would share it with you. -MG ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a letter I sent with my 5th grader regarding D.A.R.E. Teaching your kids the truth is paramount in terms of properly raising your child!!! My parents, teachers and clergy lied to me. Don’t lie to your kids. Feel free to copy this letter and send it with your kid. Our current economic crisis, the 700 billion dollar bailout plan, should be proof enough to confirm or convince you our government cannot be trusted! To Whom It May Concern, We are the parents of ______________________ and this letter is regarding our stance against D.A.R.E. We will allow _____________________ to “go through the motions” of the D.A.R.E program without disturbing the class but we teach him not to respect anything D.A.R.E. teaches. I was one of our nation’s top drug enforcement officers for 8 years and along with thousands of other ex-narcotics officers, we now realize the War On Drugs is unjust, bias, prejudice and cruel. We believe in healthy drug education and awareness programs and we teach our kids the truth about drugs…unlike the D.A.R.E. program your school is It is unfortunate we refer to our current education system as, “public schools,” yet we allow government agents (police) to be the teachers! I love this letter, it's just a shame that more parents don't send letters to school opposing government indoctrination of children.
Good polite and informative letter explaining the parents position and a decent way to handle the situation. Now I am curious if there was a response to the letter and how would the child 'have' to respond on a test of D.A.R.E. material. I'd assume they would have to give the 'D.A.R.E. appropriate answer'. This would require the parents to (then) educate their child on the education 'system' where you will have to give (them) the answer they are looking for even if you disagree with it. How sad.

but I went through DARE and i don't remember being tested. I remember speeches, and i remember films, and other assorted crap - but I don't remember ever being quizzed.
Perhaps thats why teachers love it so much. They can let the cop take over, or just pop in a movie and then slip out and go do the drugs of their choice (caffiene, nicotine, pills, etc...)- - hahhahhaaa.
Seriously though, the GAO (governmental accountability office) has done feasibility studies on the effectiveness of the D.A.R.E. program and surprise surprise... it has little to no impact on actually reducing usage as the rates of teen use of various drugs has remained fairly steady (there have been fluctuations up and down for some drugs as they go in/out of popularity and availability, but nothing significant) for the 14-16 yr old crowd and if I remember correctly, no change or even worse results for high school seniors. I.e, kids who went through DARE were actually more likely to experiment with drugs as seniors than those seniors who did not do DARE in middle school.
But, most police districts now have full time DARE officers, DARE vans or SUV's, propaganda pamphlets streaming out of every orifice and the like. I guess they have to justify their existence & budgets somehow, and "saving the childrens" is the best method yet ever devised for doing just that. Regardless of how effective the program actually is.
