The link provided will probably not work for you if you are not a member at the Project Awake site, so I have pasted it here, in full:

Well, it's clear that one of my favorite outlets for supporting the individual businessperson over corporations is via Etsy.com. But what are some other ways you can get things you need or want without going the corporate route? Here's some ideas:

Shop locally, and "shop around".
I know it's very easy to go to the all-encompassing grocery store or mall, but your health and wallet are better off if you shop in a few different places.
*Farmer's Markets/farm stands
*Flea Markets
*Yard Sales
*Discount and "bargain" stores

with the discount and bargain stores, I am not talking about Wal Mart and Target, here. In my area, there is a small chain of locally owned stores called Ocean State Job Lot. They have some fairly high quality goods for low prices. They do carry "name brands", but they also get overstock from places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, making it more affordable to buy organic foods. It is possible that stores like this exist in your area. Search them out, it is worth it!

Another alternative is taking a Do It Yourself approach. You have a mind and two hands, use them! Think about what skills you have, and what skills you could potentially develop. It is very easy to make things you need or want from scratch, and, contrary to popular belief, it's a lot more fulfilling than just going out and buying something. This approach isn't for everyone, of course, but don't ever tell yourself that you "can't" do something, because honestly, you put one foot in front of the other, and the next thing you know, you've done it. You just have to put your mind to work and not allow yourself to think that you can't do it.

The bottom line is to think about what you're consuming, and how much you consume. Realize that necessities for survival come first and everything else is a luxury. I believe one of the first steps to gaining back our freedom is to boycott major corporate outlets, and to do so successfully, you need to do your research, prioritize your spending, and eliminate unnecessary garbage from your life! Most of what the corporations are trying to sell you is disposable and unnecessary garbage that you not only don't need - but if you knew what was really in a lot of this stuff and how it gets made, and what it gets made with, you wouldn't want to buy it anyway!

Please feel free to ask questions and offer your own ideas about how to eliminate the corporate entity from your lives, and hopefully from the world. :)
