Anytime someone mentions the word "Fair trade" it is almost always anything but fair, and far from beneficial.

On the nolan chart I score

On the nolan chart I score 100% on the individual freedom side but only 80% on economic issues. The reason for the 80% is that I don't support free trade with bass akward countries that have dirt cheap labor. On that issue I consider myself a constitutionalist and the constitution clearly gives government the power to levy taxes on imports.

It should be pretty obvious that industry is leaving America at an alarming rate. It is especially obvious if you live here in Michigan. Auto companies are closing plants here and opening new ones in Mexico, China, and other low cost countries. People are losing jobs and homes are going into foreclosure. That is happening throughout the country although perhaps not as bad, as here.

Look at any manufactured good from toys to tools and most likely you will see a made in China label. Rarely does it say made in the USA. Not too long ago most things were made here. Industry made America an economic powerhouse and brought prosperity to all Americans. Without industry what will we be? What do we provide that we can sell to the rest of the world? In my estimation without industry we're screwed. Can we be an independent and sovereign nation if we are dependent on China for the manufactured goods we need? I doubt it.

It isn't just a matter of lost jobs. Its a matter of lost industry. If you are ever in Auburn Hills Michigan stop by the Walter P Chrysler museum. It's mostly about cars but there is also a section that shows the contribution American Industry made to the war effort in WWII. They made guns, tanks, airplanes, trucks and all the manufactured goods needed to win the war. Every company that could manufacture anything was building things for the war. Even Singer Sewing Machine was making pistols. Now if we get into another situation like that, will China make those things for us? How about if we're at war with them?

NAFTA is not Free Trade

NAFTA is government regulated trade not free trade. I'm for free trade but amongst economic equals. For years in the late 1800s we had a nationalistic trade policy and they were some of the most prosperous times our nation has ever seen. Also, NAFTA leads to the the NAFTA superhighway built by taking over thousands of acres through eminent domain, The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America Act, The North American Union, and perhaps even a United Nations type world government and massive globalization.
