Dear Fellow Americans: Ron Paul's House bill H.R. 220
Support H.R.220: Common Sense About Identity Theft and REAL ID
House bill H.R.220, short-titled the "Identity Theft Prevention Act of 2007," introduced by Rep. Ron Paul on January 4, 2007, purportedly would:
reduce identity theft by prohibiting the use of a Social Security number for any purpose other than for specified Social Security and tax purposes;
prohibit the federal government from establishing a national ID or uniform identifier system; and
prevent federal agencies from using federal grants, contracts, or funding (the carrot and stick strategy) to compel or blackmail states into adopting uniform ID standards that would create a de facto national ID system.
The establishing of a national ID card has far-reaching ramifications, with the draconian potential that someday every citizen might be required to use a trackable national ID card in order maintain a livelihood or function in society. Furthermore, the REAL ID rebellion among the states over federal requirements to make state driver's licenses serve as a national ID card demands the fullest possible debate in Congress on the entire range of legislative options, including the plan of H.R.220. This bill should not be swept under the rug by a committee.
Help get H.R.220 out of committee and to the House floor for a vote.
Ask your congressman to cosponsor H.R.220 if he or she has not already done so.

It is absolutely sad that a bill with the magnitutde of this importance (National Security and Personal Identification protection) has sat in the House Ways and Means Committee, Social Security Subcommittee since January 18, 2007 - without introduction to the floor for debate and a vote -- particularly when Congress is able to push illegal war funding or "national condolences" to a country devastated by mother nature in record time...
I have written to Congressman Joe Wilson (2nd District in the state of South Carolina) and expressed not only the importance of, but also the expeditious need for this legislation to be introduced and passed by Congress, and like the previous posters, I encourage you all to do the same with your own Congressmen.
If you are not sure who your Congressman is, then visit the House of Representative's website to locate him/her. Here's a link to a full Congressional listing, where you can then subsequently link to your Congressman's website to contact them:

Below is the letter I wrote to my own Congressman - and I personally know mine as well, so you bet, I am following this up with a phone call. ;-)
H.R. Bill # 220
Representative Wilson,
I am writing you today to encourage you to support Representative Ron Paul's proposed legislation H.R. # 220. For far too long now, we American citizens have blindly accepted the federal government's words that their protective security measures are in our collective best interest (in the name of Homeland Security). This is a dangerous proposition in that we have sat back idly and allowed our government to slowly usurp our Constitutional rights and freedoms using fear mongering techniques.
The "Patiot Act" has created a conduit by which executive privileges are unconstitutionally being invoked to war with foreign nations and invade the privacy of American citizens.
The "Real ID Act" is one step closer to promoting a full National ID card (again, an invasion into the privacy of citizens), and unconstitutionally tramples states' rights that are guaranteed by the 10th Amendment to our Constitution. In addition, it claims to prevent/minimize identity theft, yet the proposed legislation consolidates personal information, which would in turn, create inherent vulnerabilities.
Both of these legislations have been used to blanketly rest on the false guise of national security and homeland defense, yet our government has taken that guise and used it to promote war with foreign nationals in Iraq and Afghanistan... and if we're not careful, with Iran as well.
Our nation continues to dump billions of dollars into failing government programs here at home and abroad. We continue to incure national debt at staggering rates, and it is all for the sake of "protecting America's interests" when they both do quite the contrary.
H.R. Bill # 220 seeks to reduce identity theft by restricting the use of the Social Security # to tax purposes only. This bill mandates a cease and desist of the creation of a "Real ID" or "National ID" system. Finally, the legislation restricts the government's from using federal funds to promote or insist states' compliance on adopting a national ID system (a form of blackmail). In essence, this bill would renew the usage of personal identification back to the rights of the people and restores the constitutional rights to the states and people that were originally afforded protection of said rights by the Constitution.
This legislation was introduced January 4, 2007, and sits in the House Ways and Means Committee, Social Security Subcommittee. That is absolutely unsatisfactory given the important ramifications of personal identification and true security - particularly when Congreess expeditiously votes to support unnecessary legislation to send condolences to Myanmar in the span of a couple of hours.
Please see to it that H.R. Bill # 220 does not fall victim to the deviant "overload" excuses of Washington politics. It is essential that we, as a state, and as American citizens start demanding to regain our rights and put government's role back into their Constitutional perspective frame of mind. Thanks and kindest regards,
I contacted my Congressman and I hope everyone else does too. We could defeat the REAL ID and other versions of REAL ID by getting this bill passed. Ron Paul is so wise to introduce it. It's bothered me for awhile now how everyone has to have your SS# for everything.
We need more Ron Paul types in Congress to get legislation like this through. I hope everyone is supporting Ron Paul candidates as much as they are able.
Lastly, more of us need to run for public office. I attended a Transportation Committee Meeting recently at my state capitol and I was shocked that the committee was passing so many obviously unconstitutional bills. These politicians don't think the same way we do. The only way we are going to get real change is if we run ourselves. If enough of us run, some of us will get elected. No one has time to run but we must anyway.
