Type of Content: Article The Opening Statement made by the lead American prosecutor at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial, Robert H. Jackson, would, if anyone bothered to read it, eliminate the red herring issue of deliberate lying, from discussions considering the question: “Was the Invasion of Iraq a legitimate option?” Jackson presented on outline for the case that would be presented to the court. Jackson told the jury that if any country orders an “Invasion by its armed forces, with or without a declaration of war, of the territory of another State” it qualifies as a Crime against Peace. President Bush’s apologists would point out that time was of the essence and extraordinary means were needed to cope with the situation. Jackson anticipated that line of reasoning when he said: “Any resort to war - to any kind of a war - is a resort to means that are inherently criminal.” Read »
