To paraphrase George Santayana, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to experience it first hand.” Sometimes the lessons of history are “taught” in such a way that it would be better to ignore them. There have probably been very few days gone by during the last seventy years that someone somewhere has not mentioned the “appeasement” of Neville Chamberlain at Munich on September 30, 1938. During the last several years, the “lesson” has come with a strong warning that even talking to the “enemy” is a form of appeasement. But, what did the agreement at Munich really represent.
