>>"I concur with the young man who pointed out that when profits override morality that it concerns him, well it should become a concern to any one with the proper development of conscience.
The selling of illegal drugs provide a "profit"; prostitution of children provide a "profit"; genetically engineered food provide a "profit"; pharmaceutical drugs provide an enormous profit but, not of these profits are proof that a "Free market" is responsible for that profit."
Of course you can profit by stealing someone's property or by enslaving someone, and such profit is immoral. BUT you can also make huge profits selling things that poulianna or Dr. Drumright would consider to be unnecessary or even harmful, and that is NOT, in my opinion, necessarily immoral. If the people buying what you are selling are doing so voluntarily, then clearly THEY don't think the product is unnecessary or harmful, and I believe that ultimately the harm that comes from not allowing people to choose what is best for themselves is greater than the harm of any product people might choose to buy.
You can't lump child prostitution in with selling illegal drugs, genetically engineered food or pharmaceuticals. Child prostitution is not permissible in a free society, because it involves the initiation of force. All of the other examples you gave should be allowed in a free market system. In business, people are motivated by the desire to make a profit. What many of you here don't seem to understand is that by and large that is a good thing. There is no bigger incentive to be productive than the profit motive, and productivity is the engine of prosperity. Prosperity leads to higher standards of living; better health and longer lives. And that, in my opinion is objectively a good thing, no matter how you look at it. I happen to think that pharmaceutical companies would continue to turn large profits even in the absence of government coercion, and that if they got their profits without government intervention, they would be entirely and legitimately entitled to those profits.
In a profit-driven free market, anyone who has been harmed by a product can sue the maker of that product for damages, and of course people can be as cautious or conservative as they want to be regarding what kind of new or experimental drug they are willing to try. For these reasons I believe that there is no need for the government to regulate drugs or any other product.
Without pharmaceutical companies there would be no cancer drugs, no insulin for diabetes, no statins for heart disease-- and I can assure you there would be many fewer old people alive today. That would not be a good thing, in my opinion. If you want to argue with me on this, please explain how so many millions of people are being persuaded to take these drugs against their own best interests. Do you really thing they are all that stupid and easily led? What about the results of all the scientific studies that prove that chemotherapy, insulin and heart medications can save and extend lives? my grandmother would not be alive today were it not for the Tamoxifen that prevented her breast cancer from recurring for 30 years. That is just one example of a life saved by a product from a pharmaceutical company.
Sometimes those products don't work, and sometimes they are harmful, but I trust CONSUMERS to be the ones best equipped to do the research and decide for themselves what the truth is, which is what happens to a certain extent already (anyone can inform themselves about any drug; anyone can refuse any treatment), and also what is much more likely to happen in a free market system (anyone would have access to any treatment that anyone else wants to offer, including supplements that are currently banned etc... so they would have a lot more choices).
I will go out on a limb here and say that whether you are a huge pharmaceutical company or a neighborhood chiropractic practitioner, it is good for you to seek to make as big a profit as you can. As long as you make your profit without coercing or stealing from anyone else, you are doing a good thing. Can anyone here give me an example of profit that they consider to be immoral and yet that involves neither theft nor the initiation of force against another person?
FYI - not for argument :-)
6 Ways to Reduce Inflammation -- Without a Statin Drug
statins, drugs, prescription drugs, pharmaceuticals, crestor, cholesterol, inflammation, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, deceit, deception, manipulationExperts predict that as a result of the so-called JUPITER study, which seemed to show that the statin drug Crestor lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes in those with high levels of inflammation, will lead to millions of people being put on statin drugs.
But the benefits were actually tiny -- about 0.72 percent of the statin takers in the trial had a heart attack or stroke, compared with 1.5 percent of those taking placebos.
Instead of a statin drug that comes with dangerous side effects, try these six measures instead:
1. Stop smoking. Smoking hardens the arteries and increase inflammation. But research shows you can reverse all the damaging effects to your arteries within 10 years of quitting.
2. Think olive oil, fish, and nuts. People who stick with a Mediterranean-style diet based on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil can lower their levels of inflammation. It works by increasing the amount of foods you eat that are rich in omega-3 fats, which fight inflammation.
3. Get active. Exercise a great way to lower inflammation without any of the side effects associated with medications.
4. Shrink your waist size. If you're a woman with a waist measurement of over 35 inches or a man with a waist of over 40 inches, you probably have high inflammation. Whittling a few inches off the waist by reducing your portions and increasing activity can go a long way toward solving that problem.
5. Get enough sleep. A new study shows that elderly people with high blood pressure who sleep less than 7.5 hours a night have dramatically elevated chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Other research has shown that both too little and too much sleep increases inflammation. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says most adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.
6. Reduce stress. High levels of stress hormones can lead to the release of excess inflammatory chemicals.

Dr. Mercola Dr. Mercola's Comments:
I can’t tell you how pleased I am that the “latest and greatest” study on statin benefits, called JUPITER, has been exposed by even mainstream media as being both deceptive and steeped in conflicts of interest. I commented on this study just last week.
With at least 12 million Americans taking statins, and “experts'” recommending that another 23 million “should” be taking them, it's important to educate yourself on the use of these drugs.
Statins are already one of the most widely prescribed class of drugs, and the JUPITER study’s misleading conclusions about the benefits of Crestor have the potential to push their already vastly inflated usage over the edge.
Don’t fall for it.
The language used to publicize their results has been thoroughly massaged and manipulated to make the drug sound vastly better than it really is. A staggering 5,000 percent better, to be precise. Because whereas headlines are boasting a 50 percent or higher reduced risk of heart attack and strokes, the REAL difference in cardiovascular events between those taking the statin drug Crestor and those taking a placebo was just 1.2 percent.
The REAL “benefit” of Crestor is this: If 100 people are treated with Crestor for one year, only ONE will be spared a cardiovascular event they otherwise might have had.
I for one am underwhelmed by these findings.
Exposing 100 people to the potentially lethal side effects of Crestor, or any other statin drug, to save one person from a cardiovascular event that could have been prevented with lifestyle changes, is not what I call good medicine.
Why are Statin Drugs Prescribed to Otherwise “Healthy” Individuals?
The JUPITER study involved 17,800 people who had high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, which is a good indicator of inflammation, and hence, heart disease risk, even among those otherwise considered healthy.
Statins are now frequently prescribed to individuals who have normal cholesterol levels if they have elevated C-reactive protein levels, to combat inflammation, and presumably reduce their risk of developing heart disease.
But taking a statin in this case will NOT resolve the underlying problem causing the increase in inflammation!
Elevated C-reactive protein levels are due to chronic damage being done to your arteries, which leads to inflammation. This is how your body responds to invaders; it’s your body’s natural and purposeful response to healing.
The REAL problem is what’s causing the damage in the first place, such as having chronically elevated blood sugar. The sugar molecule, in fact, causes far more damage than any other molecule.
If you decide to take cholesterol-lowering drugs instead of addressing the underlying problem of excess sugar in your blood stream, you are not only stopping your body’s natural healing process, you are also exposing yourself to drugs that are loaded with side effects and can deteriorate your health even further.
Instead, the CRP screening test could be a handy indicator showing that lifestyle changes are in order to naturally lower your body’s excess inflammation, which will naturally decrease your heart disease risk – no drugs required.
Your Diet – The Most Important Way to Reduce Inflammation
It’s important to realize that there are different sizes of LDL cholesterol particles, and it’s the LDL particle size that is relevant, as small particles get stuck easily and causes more inflammation.
Naturally, the drug companies really don’t want you to know this. Statins do not modulate LDL particle size, so if this became widespread knowledge it would severely limit the number of people going on cholesterol-lowering drugs.
The only way to make sure your LDL particles are large enough to not get stuck and cause inflammation and damage is through your diet. In fact, it’s one of the major things that insulin does.
So rather than taking a statin drug, you really need to focus on your diet to reduce the inflammation in your body, which is aggravated by:
* Oxidized cholesterol (cholesterol that has gone rancid, such as that from overcooked, scrambled eggs)
* Eating lots of sugar and grains
* Eating foods cooked at high temperatures
* Eating trans fats
Other Lifestyle Changes That Will Naturally Reduce Inflammation
In addition to the six excellent recommendations in the article above, and avoiding the dietary hazards just mentioned, here are a few more recommendations that can have a profound impact on reducing inflammation in your body and reducing your risk of heart disease.
1. One of the most important steps in lowering your heart disease risk is to take a high-quality krill oil that is chock full of beneficial omega-3 fats.
2. Make sure you’re eating the right foods for your body’s unique nutritional type.
3. Optimize your insulin levels. If your fasting insulin level is not lower than three consider limiting or eliminating your intake of grains and sugars until you optimize your insulin level.
4. Make sure your vitamin D levels are optimized. Most people are not aware that vitamin D can have a profoundly dramatic impact on normalizing blood pressure and lowering your risk for heart disease.
Your best source of vitamin D is through your skin being exposed to the sun. In the wintertime, however, you may need to take an oral supplement. Just make sure you’re taking the right form of vitamin D in the appropriate amounts to reap the benefits, and remember to get your vitamin D levels tested regularly.

The Eye of G_d is watching us
As a practicing chiropractic physician I am very familiar with this topic and I think this documentary is really too soft. The truth is far more treacherous than this depicts.
If you really want to know whats going on, look up I.G. Farben cartel.
Ever since about 1913, humm coincidence? NOT
A plan was envisioned to create a society completely dependent of patentable medicines and fossil fuels.
The AMA was created by a group of lawyers to establish trade barriers within the health care field. Chiropractors were thrown in jail across the country for "practicing medicine without a license."
Marijuana was outlawed, and the knowledge of botanical cures was effectively eliminated from curriculum by the newly created department of education.
In 1949 the polio vaccine was introduced with great fan fare. An excellent public relations campaign managed to take credit for the elimination of this feared disease. When in fact the disease was more than 98% eliminated prior to 1949 by the installation of sewer systems across the nation.
Welcome to my world
Have the courage to be responsible
I like the documentary. I think the Ron Paul and Peter DeFazio segment is the best although DeFazio seems to think that NAFTA is free trade. It does well to show the disgusting marriage of big corporations and government. Denouncing unlawful organizations and monopolies. Personally I think profit motive is a bad thing when it gets in the way of moral motive. That is when profit making becomes deceitful rather than innovative. Eh, but I'm a fan of Robin Hood. I don't think this documentary would be bad for cable because it does raise good points and people can then research on their own. Plus its pretty short.
I wish the movie wasn't so slanted against modern medicine. Many modern drugs can help save and prolong lives, and science has helped us tremendously in that regard. Conversely, not all supplements are harmless.
I agree with the point that we should be allowed to decide FOR OURSELVES what drugs or supplements we want to take, so I am against any government regulation of supplements (or pharmaceutical drugs, for that matter). I myself took the banned supplement L-Triptophan mentioned in the documentary for several weeks a few years ago when I was having trouble sleeping, and it helped me tremendously. Triptophan is the protein in turkey and milk that puts you to sleep. I tried some over the counter sleep medications and even prescription ones, but this was by far the best solution for me. It put me right to sleep, I slept all night, and the next morning I felt just fine. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the placebo effect, because I was very skeptical that it would work, and I had had much more faith in the other drugs I was trying. Anyhow, the effect was undeniable.
L-Triptophan was banned in the US ostensibly because several people had gotten serious brain infections as a result of contamination during the manufacturing process. But the Triptophan I took came from Canada where it is approved for medical use and available by prescription to anyone who needs it. The documentary implies that the makers of Prozac pushed for Triptophan to be banned, because it is a very effective at calming anxiety and fighting depression, and therefore would compete with Prozac. I can believe it. You know that feeling you get after a big turkey dinner? That's kind of what it felt like to take Triptophan.
So yeah, the documentary made some good points, but here's my big problem with it: the subtle digs at capitalism and the profit motive (eg. "forces of power and money", "high priests of profit".) What is wrong with profit? It's the power of government that is the problem. The real culprits are the anti free-market lobbyists who seek to increase their profits by getting the government to kill their competition, and the government that has arrogated to itself the power to interfere with what should be voluntary transactions in a free market. True capitalists, those who embrace the profit motive in the context of a free market-- those are the good guys in this scenario, as far as I am concerned.
Ultimately I have to vote this documentary down, because although it comes out against government regulation (which is good) it furthers the misconception that there is something wrong with capitalism, big corporations and the profit motive (which is one of the main stumbling blocks to furthering the cause of freedom).
