Our enemies answer one way; our founding creed tells us otherwise. Liberty remains the most effective weapon in our arsenal. By standing for liberty, by defending freedom, by sharing our prosperity throughout the world, we can inspire genuine hope in countless hearts and minds. You may not believe it, but these are the words of Michael Chertoff, Secretary of "Homeland Security." As his colleagues and their subordinates conduct unlawful surveillance, searches and seizures on American citizens, he claims to defend liberty. He is correct that liberty is the foundation of true security. Security is not the result of more police, more searches, more surveillance, and more restrictions. Security rests in the integrity, strength and resilience of society. Free people are capable of defending themselves. And the first line of defense is to maintain good relations with other nations, not for exploitative gain but for mutual advantage. It is precisely the same fear of loss that motivates both the ugly geopolitics resulting in foreign entanglements and the increasing reliance on intrusive security measures at home. If we instead teach our government to conduct its business with integrity and respect for our own liberty and that of others, we will enjoy a firm and lasting security. Read »
