Type of Content: Article WASHINGTON, DC - In an enormous executive branch power grab, Attorney General Michael Mukasey called on Congress today to authorize indefinite detention through a new declaration of armed conflict. Mukasey also proposed that Congress subvert the right of habeas corpus with a new scheme of procedures that will hide the Bush administration's past wrongdoing - an action that would undermine the constitutional guarantee of due process and conceal systematic torture and abuse of detainees. "Mukasey is asking Congress to expand and extend the war on terror forever. Anyone that this president or the next one declares to be a terrorist could then be held indefinitely without a trial," said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. "This is clearly the last gasp of an administration desperate to rationalize what is a failed legal scheme that was correctly rejected four times by the Supreme Court. With as little as five work weeks left in this Congress, there are more important issues than helping the lame-duck president cook up an indefensible plan to lock people up forever and throw away the key with no due process rights and limited judicial review." "The attorney general's proposal would hide the torture and abuse conducted since 9/11," Fredrickson said. "This is one more effort to cover up the illegal activities authorized by the president and his administration. Attorney General Mukasey might be ok with helping in a cover-up, but there is no reason to think that Congress will assist him." - - - - - - -- - Read »

i.e, Mukasey, Bush, Cheney, et al. all we have to do is wait them out and make sure they don't accomplish ANY of their goals before their terms expire. They are lame ducks simmering in a pot waiting to be fried.
Its the Congress that we must worry about because the same people who voted for the FISA legislative cave-in and all the rest will still be there (for many members of the Senate) or will be attempting to get re-elected soon (to the House). We gotta keep the pressure on!
(of course, we should keep doing all the work on the presidential front as well - our job is endless and we have a few hundred million people to educate before we can all truly be free.)
Get crackin!
Apparently, the idea here is to have Congress pass a new authorization for armed conflict in the war on terror to lift the territorial restrictions that the AUMF's for Afghanistan and Iraq contain. Thus, it would be essentially a "declaration of war"(note: not in the proper constitutional sense, more like an AUMF) that would encompass the ENTIRE WORLD - including America! They might as well just ask for a declaration of martial law and the suspension of the constitution because that is exactly what the point of changing the language is meant to do if you get beyond the subtle legal niceties- all the while immunizing past illegal conduct such as torture/kidnapping/murder/etc... Its truly disturbing that this man was allowed to become Attorney General at the behest of a few Democratic senators who could have blocked this nomination - - surprise surprise it has come back to bite us all in the rump. Who could have predicted that? Oh ya - EVERYBODY HERE! This is like FISA redux except that Mukasey's nomination came first chronologically.
They time and again call on more terror attacks, and say "it would be good for policy" and the like. Before or after the election would more than likely be the time, or just wait till the handed over power takes full control in after the election, and then use this card.
Just recently there where Bio drills being conducted in Honolulu. They want the nuke though, anything to get the people to give up their rights, and the dissenters in the camps, and then lock down the information flow so the rest of the world cant find out about it, while the citizens are to afraid to do anything due to the swat teams and military outside their houses.
Many people are saying that the Military wont go along with it. That might be true, but they are starting the let felons and immigrants into the Military. There are many other Classically Historical earmarks of tyranny gathering, but these two are the least obvious, that will have the most ramifications no the citizenry.
I dont think that they are willing to risk this card just yet. There is nothing coming from Captain May any longer as well, so I dont know what this means.
These criminals must be stopped.
