Type of Content: Article Some days its just good to sit back and take it all in. The Republican party, having imploded from within can’t decide whether to promote Sarah Palin to star status, or burn her at the stake for being a witch. Personally, I would think option #2 is out as Ms. Palin has been officially de-witched by her pastor. After the resounding defeat comprising all levels of government, suffered by the Republicans in this last election, someone with some grasp of reality should take control. I don’t think its going to happen. Apparently there is one faction still wanting to promote the party as the embodiment of fringe religious beliefs, and another faction that has realized this is no longer a sustainable premise. Will rational thought and dialogue win out? Or, will the wing-nuts retain control of what is now a fractured and dysfunctional party system? Read »

I think the "social values" wing of the GOP is at least as responsible for its further decline as the neocons. Some people just seem to be natural attracted to the issues that keep us divided and ruled.
The premier divide and rule issue is, of course, the abortion issue. The battle over abortion has raged in the political sphere for at least 35 years. What great advances can the anti-abortion forces claim for their years of effort, other than relabeling themselves as being pro-life? Roe v. Wade still rules and will continue to rule for at least the next decade. Any laws that would significantly curtail abortion are nowhere in sight. The price of this battle is quite large while it has accomplished next to nothing. The fight to have a constitutional government has suffered greatly due to the focus of many on this one single issue.
The pro(some)life movement is on the rocks. Many of them jumped on the pro-war bandwagon and never looked back. Pro-life and pro-war? Go figure. Why should anyone take social conservatives seriously after one of their main leaders, Pat Robinson, endorsed Rudy (family values?) Giuliani for president? It seems one thing trumps their trying to force their values on others, and that is their thirst for blood. Think this statement is over the top? Just look at who makes up the greater part the group of people who are the most ardent supporters of the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Just look at who the most militaristic group of people in this country are. Trace most of the social conservatives back to their historical roots and you will find yourself deep in America's racist past.
The Republican Party has always had a lot of rhetoric and not much else. Neocons and "social values" folks have just sunk it to even lower depths.
Depoliticize abortion and other "social values" issues and save the republic. Much greater success will be achieved in reducing the rate of abortions through pray, love and peaceful persuasion rather than by attempting to use the state's power.
Clyde Wilson shows how the Republican Party was flawed from the beginning.
