Type of Content: Article Cfuel Emissions from industry and motor vehicles release smog, ozone, particles, and nitrogen and sulfur oxides (NOx and SOx) into our environment, all of which can severely affect our health. Children and seniors are particularly vulnerable to this. For those with asthma, air pollution can trigger an attack often. People with chronic lung heart or circulatory conditions may experience worsened symptoms daily. United States estimates that every year several thousand citizens die prematurely due to air pollution. According to the Medical Association, in New York alone tens of thousands of people visit emergency rooms or are hospitalized each year as a result of exposure to smog. The average adult breathes about 15,000 to 20,000 litres of air each day. Children inhale more per pound of body weight than adults. In the past century, there has been a sharp increase in the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Consequently, the earth's average temperature is rising. Scientists predict that the average temperature could rise several degrees Fahrenheit over the next century, with serious consequences for the earth's ecosystems and humankind. Climate Change & GHGs According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Control, increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are responsible for over 60% of the greenhouse effect. The primary cause is the burning of fossil fuels. An alternative fuel source that emits low or zero greenhouse gases will help slow the threat of global warming. Today, fuel cell power generally use gas as the source of the hydrogen. In this case, the fuel cell power will emit carbon dioxide, but far less than conventional systems, since fuel cells boast higher energy efficiency. Even fuel cells that use fossil fuels as their hydrogen source are expected to reduce GHG emissions by as much as 85%, because of their high efficiency.
