It would almost be funny if it was not so sad. Days after the nationalization of Fannie and Freddie, we are now witnessing the nationalization of AIG as the federal government steps in to take over one of the world's largest insurers with $85 billion of taxpayer funds. This is another fine example of what Ludwig von Mises pointed out in the early 20th century - government intervention leads to more government intervention and middle of the road policies lead to socialism. With housing and insurance mostly socialized, America is now competing with those European-style socialist nations who enjoy tremendous tax rates, a stagnant economy, and complete dependence on government. Even the Canadians are beginning to bash the US for being more socialist than they are!
