From Free to Choose. Milton relates the tale of the pencil in one of the most succinct descriptions of the market and its connection to peace and freedom ever made. The story of the pencil, I believe, originates with Leonard Reed. Enjoy the incomparable Milton at his best.

Can you imagine a pencil

Can you imagine a pencil created entirely by a command economy? It would weight about 3 lbs, have erasers on both ends, take years to manufacture, and cost in excess of a thousand bucks.

Your instincts serve you well beebee!

I'm told that Soviet Bloc pencils at least through the late 1970s typically did not have erasers.

aside from the argument

aside from the argument itself, it's its simplicity that adds to its appeal. i also think that the same applies to what has contributed to Ron Paul's massive following, the fact that RP was able to simplify seemingly complicated issues into just a few sentences backed by a handful of infallible guide lining principles.
given a strong foundation, complicated issues can be easily explained without finding yourself trying to defend a hypocritical argument.
awesome clip neilbaxter4!
