Type of Content: Article The FISA Amendments Act of 2008 now being mulled-over in Congress is a very frightening bill. It would update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 to effectively grant immunity from civil lawsuits to telecommunications companies that agreed to spy on their customers as part of the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping program, which started shortly before the World Trade Center attacks in 2001. In a nutshell, the bill proposes that, if the White House asked a phone company to spy with its assurance that it was legal to do so, then that's enough to dismiss any civil case against the telecom. Isn't it ironic that the hypocritical Democrats, who like to tout themselves to the public as defenders of our civil liberties, have known all along about Bush's illegal surveillance programs, and have capitulated with the White House since Bush's illegal wiretapping program first began--way before 9/11. This bill is part of a campaign of collusion between the Democratic Congress and the Neo-conservative Bush administration (big groups are big government socialists), immunizing not only the telecommunications companies, but the administration and any members of Congress, on either side of the aisle, that may have been involved.
