In talking about his plans to double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation's military services, he made this rather shocking (and chilling) pledge: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

What does it mean?

If we're going to create some kind of national police force as big, powerful and well-funded as our combined U.S. military forces, isn't this rather a big deal?
I thought Democrats generally believed the U.S. spent too much on the military. How is it possible their candidate is seeking to create some kind of massive but secret national police force that will be even bigger than the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force put together?

The U.S. Army alone has nearly 500,000 troops. That doesn't count reserves or National Guard. In 2007, the U.S. Defense budget was $439 billion.
Is Obama serious about creating some kind of domestic security force bigger and more expensive than that?

Who will Obama appoint to administer this new "civilian national security force"? Where will the money come from? Where in the Constitution does he see justification for the federal government creating such a domestic army?

(We need to get Obama to clarify this statement. This does seem to be an extention of the "rent a mobs" following Mr Obama, and the green police that Al Gore is assembling. Of course this is extremely dangerous to liberty! So ask yourself this... Will you TRUST Obama (and his "advisors") to retain a modern day Gestapo, or "Secret State Police"? With all we have heard lately, and Obama going to address the Germans, one gets the creepy idea that Bush Jr was nothing more than a ruse to get us to something much, much worse!)

It can't be a civilian army

It can't be a civilian army if its run by government turds, thats the only that keeps our current military from being a civilian army. I think Obama has a vision of America, a socialist vision where everyone in America is an employee of the Federal Government.

If you put a noose around the neck of a neo con and put him up on a stool, he'll kick the stool out from under himself because "well for better or for worse I'm already here."

I realize that, as usual, the Post is in the tank for the Democrat candidate, but your lies are getting a little obvious. Your "Full transcript of Obama's prepared remarks" article in the 02/07/08 issue, covering Obama's "Call to Service" speech in Colo. Springs, was NOT the full transcript! It was missing a very interesting paragraph outlining a plan of Obama's that I consider somewhat alarming.
I don't know if Obama's campaign didn't include it in the copy they sent the Post, or if the Post decided to omit it to cover Obama's rear end (although I suspect the latter), but if anyone at the Post is interested, the paragraph occurred immediately after the following paragraph:
"And we'll use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create an online network where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment, and skill sets; you'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities. This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda, and make their own change from the bottom up."
The paragraph that was omitted is as follows:
"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."
If you wish to verify this for yourself, the FULL SPEECH can be found on YouTube at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df2p6867_pw

The paragraph in question is at about the 16 min point.
Now, I don't know about you, but I have a problem with a presidential candidate who announces he's planning to establish "a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as our entire military. I realize Obama was mentored in his youth by two members of the US Communist Party, but I thought he would wait until elected before he announced he was forming his own KGB.
I'm also a little curious as to what he plans to do with the FBI, DEA, TSA, Border Patrol, ICE, etc when he forms this "civilian national security force." Do you think it might be too much to ask of the Post's reporters to query him on these plans? If not now, then maybe during the DNC Convention next month? And please report his answer/evasion/obfuscation someplace prominent in the Post and not buried in the back somewhere. I'm sure your readers would appreciate some comprehensive political reporting for a change.
Thanks.

Im saving the FLV from youtube now incase they pull it. Here is the BS "prepared remarks" transcript link wthout the quote: http://www.denverpost.com/ci_9765136

This is really scary stuff.

This is really scary stuff. I hope this is being taken out of context otherwise we're in big trouble. Although watching this clip of what he said I can't think of what else he could have meant. Does anybody know where you can watch a longer clip of his speech.

I think it's a great idea!!

I think it's a great idea!! Except my version is called a MILITIA and it is NOT run by the government.

I'm not sure the masses are going to fall for this- hopefully I won't be surprised.

Well, if you put it that way

I like the idea too

I want it to be a militia with a live band like they had in the old days
at least a drummer and a trumpet section, and a string section of guitars and banjos
I will be the chief band master in charge if no one disagrees
Also, I'll still carry a musket but will attend to the band during long marches and training sessions

Okay, I think this calls for a money bomb

Slow Down a Minute

While it's true that the comment interestingly has been removed from the print sources, it does remain on the original video at the 16:51 point. I encourage you to view the entire speech, or at least the sub-topic area just prior to the statement in question. I believe you'll have to agree that his statement must be taken in the context of his previous remarks as it is his concluding comment on that topic.

It's my assessment that, when viewed in context, the statement in question does not provide any "smoking gun" evidence of an intent to create any gestapo type organization or allude to anything apart and separate from the programs he spoke of during that segment of the speech. In my opinion, in order to create such an image one would have to take the concluding remark totally out of context with the subject sub-topic.

Now, why that part was excised from the printed transcripts is another question.

I'm all for grounding in reality, gw, but...

His statement is " "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

WHatever he spoke of in the previous paragraphs, he is suddenly talking about using the civilian force for NATIONAL SECURITY, not to teach people how to excel in "green jobs," "provide healthcare" or any of the other purposes for all of these new govenrment employees. He specifically says that there will be a civilian national security force. THere is no way to put a silk hat on that.

Come on people!

No reaction to this? This is a candidate for the President of the United States calling for the formation of a police state!
Are you seeing this police? Are you seeing this you National Guard soldiers? Are you seeing this Ron Paul supporters?
Are you all ready to take marching orders from snot nosed little punks in uniform?
I was once a highschool teacher. I know the mentality of these children that Mr. Obama is calling to fill the positions in this civilian security force. Turn on MTV folks and learn to love it because those are the people that are going to be running your lives until the country is finally dissolved.

It means...

That his "army" will be filled with the lemmings that follow his campaign. People that could be led right over the edge of a cliff by any piper that came along with a promise. These sheeple will be your civilian police force. Just wait until they get a little taste of power. People like myself and others who love liberty and respect the Constitution will be a tiny and ever persecuted minority.
When the people tire of taking orders from the uninformed jackasses that populate our ever dumbing country we will have to take up our stashed arms and take the country back by force.
