While it's good to spread the word and bring people together.
I think it's very low if it comes down to monetizing and encouraging recruitment for the sake of recruitment. I know most people don't do it for the reward, but the attitude is very important.
Only sales people and cults want to recruit people without properly converting them (going for numbers rather than quality).
Giving away a prize shows two things:
1. you can afford to give out a prize
2. you spend more time thinking about how many people are on your list (not accounting for spam), than to improving your quality of programming which would in long term sell your message on its own.
The biggest difference between a good traditional marketer and a network marketer is EXACTLY THAT.
A good salesman knows if the product is good, he only needs to be lucky enough to be the middle man, and say nothing else.
A network marketer always thinks about selling first, selling fast, getting others to sell, regardless of the future consequences.
I am not accusing anybody of anything, but I hope my point is made and you are aware of the difference in attitude, philosophy. You should all be smart enough to know which salesman will have a longer reputation of being a businessman of success, while another is known for his speed, and forgotten speedily later.
