On the surface, the LP and the CP appear to be quite similar. The very name of the Constitution Party appeals to the libertarian-leaning voter looking for a political party dedicated towards returning to a government strictly bound by the Constitution--as the Libertarian Party wishes for also. Additionally, the LP and the CP are very close on issues like foreign policy, Second Amendment rights, economic policy and health care.

However, beyond their initial similarities on the surface, a more in-depth look at the two parties shows profound differences in both platform and ideology.

I'm voting for Barr

Let's be clear; there's milk that's been in my fridge longer than BB has been a Libertarian. I do not think he would be a fab president.

But he's not going to win.

My vote is for the L platform, for gaining momentum.

We should've all payed closer attention to who they were nominating, but we were caught up with the good Dr. and the party was in a very akward position.

Again, don't vote for BB, vote for the principals of the only moral, constitutional party in existence, even if they did make a lame choice this time around, it's OUR fault.

Gary Johnson / Dennis Miller 2012!

The religion differences are huge

Although there are many similiarities, the religion differences are substantial and in practice, could lead to much bigger differences in the issues. The Constitution Party could end up looking a lot like Republicans if there ideas were put into practice.

Libertarian Party or Chuck Baldwin?

I am definitely a libertarian, though I don't know if I'd go as far as to say I'm a Libertarian (I don't think the LP has everything right). That being said, I definitely think the Libertarian Party is much closer to being on the right track than the Constitutional Party. So as far as parties go, I would vote Libertarian if given the choice. However, I've always been a firm believer in voting for the candidate, not the party. I think Bob Barr is a disgrace to libertarianism. However, I think Chuck Baldwin isn't half bad. By my past logic, this would mean a vote for Baldwin would be the right vote. But I've always voted between the Dem or Rep... and let's face it--Baldwin doesn't have a chance to win in November... nor would Barr. So a big part of me feels that this election comes down to making a statement and showing the public that there is a growing concern over the ideology (if you can call it that) put forth by the Democrats and Republicans. So I think a vote for the Libertarian Party might serve the purpose more.... to make the country aware that many people believe in and support libertarian ideals. I still have to decide... but I offer up this little internal debate to get some more of you thinking about what you want to accomplish in this election if, like me, you want to vote for a third party candidate.

Why not Baldwin for Pres and Libertarain for the rest?

Barr is truly a monumental ass and I have personal knowledge that BIG money left the party because they nominated him as their candidate. I'm voting Baldwin for Pres and libertarian anywhere else there is an opportunity. Just an idea.

If I wasn't lucky enough to

If I wasn't lucky enough to live in a state where Dr Paul is on our ballot, that's exactly what I would be doing. Lucky us though....Dr Ron Paul is the CPOM candidate for president on our ballot. I am part of the Ron Paul Tour and we are trying to comb the state of Montana with his/our message. We passed out over 2000 slim jims, many handmade copies of Dr Paul's voting record and lots of bumper stickers last weekend in Helena, Great Falls, and Havre. Onward and Upward with the Freedom and Constitutional government message!

LC VS CP

Nice article tajitj. I consider myself more of a libertarian. I was actually in the process of leaving the Republicans when Ron Paul started running for President, so I stayed to support him. After Paul dropped out and unable to conscientiously vote for McCain I started looking at the Libertarian party again but even though I feel more libertarian I believe that Chuck Baldwin is a better candidate. Neither Baldwin nor Barr are 100% on track for me but Baldwin is far closer to the mark and it looks like there are several libertarians that are not happy with Barr as the candidate. Baldwins stance on the border, Real Id and his announcement that he would appoint Paul as the treasury secretary sold me on his candidacy. I will probably abandon the Republican party (actually they abandoned me and many others) and join the libertarians but Baldwin still gets my vote.

Question for Baldwin supporters who are libertarians

How do you rationalize the Constitution Party's religious views?
