Digg!

My, oh, my- this is BIG news for the war on drugs!!

John Conyers, as some of you might know, is a congressman. Some of you might not know, however, that he is also is the Chairman of the Judicial Committee.
On April 29, 2008, he sent a letter to the DEA's acting administrator, Michele Leonhart.

Don't worry- this was no ordinary letter.

No, this was a letter DEMANDING information (and ALOT of it). I guess Congress is sick and tired of hearing about innocent Californians getting raided by the DEA.

NOW there will be answers. They have until July 1, 2008 to respond with ALL requested information- or a full-fledged investigation is going to take place.

Read the actual letter, here:

Its about time! However, I

Its about time! However, I cant but help note the irony & strange alliances the medical marijuana issue can create. Essentially, we have democrats supporting a state's rights (Gasp!) federalism issue - and you have conservatives (opposed to mmj) demanding nanny-state federal controls and trumpeting the supremacy clause. What strange bed fellows marijuana can create.

I think I have a very simple solution: How bout Congress support medical marijuana because it helps sick and dying people feel better?

Or is that too radical a proposition? Is it as radical as state's rights democrats or big government conservative nanny staters? Are we in bizzaro world or what?

In reality, I dont give a flying fig how Congress gets to the point where they accept medical marijuana so long as they do in fact get there. Thanks for sharing this story, Ms Green. You are soon becoming a fan favorite :) Keep up the good work.

Thank you!! And yes, you are

Thank you!!
And yes, you are correct- this whole thing is crazy and irrational.

Could you imagine going to your local doctor, paying for the visit, paying for your prescription, and going home to later be raided by a bunch of DEA agents with guns in the middle of the night? And to top it off, being taken to prison?

All the while, you are sick and need medication (which your doctor prescribed)... yet, they refuse to give it to you.

My goodness. What has this nation come to?

Let's not forget that these patients are not a bunch of teenagers trying to get a legal high. These are people in wheelchairs and people who have such debilitating illnesses they cannot function without mediciation. This needs to stop. Now.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoy my articles as much as I enjoy posting them. :)

A personal story

When I was in lawschool here in IL - a woman in lake county, IL had a few marijuana plants growing in her backyard. She had a very serious medical condition with her eyes and according to her own doctor, should have been blind by now. She already had undergone 13 surgeries to correct the problem to no avail. Cannabis, for whatever reason, helped her keep her sight. Although she is technically legally blind and under disability.

Anyway, she was busted when a neighbor spotted the plants and called the police. We fought the case up on appeal only to be told that the state of IL does not recognize a medical necessity defense to a charge of marijuana possession; further, that IL does not recognize marijuana as medicine, etc... Part of the hostility stems direclty from Congress' classification of marijuana as a schedule 1 controlled susbtance which means two things: 1) marijuana has no currently accepted medical uses and 2) it is highly addictive & dangerous. Both of these propositions are abundantly absurd, as we all know.

However, Congress fails to note that there stubborn refusal to re-classify marijuana into a lower schedule (such as cocaine or something) prevents both a) the ability of researchers to access the plant for legitimate studies 2) the ability of people in states who do not have medical marijuana laws to avail themself of a possible defense to criminal charges. I doubt that Congress even imagined the unintended consequences of their decision in 1972 or whatever to put marijuana in that most restrictive class - but it is beyond time for them get off their duff and do something. The frustration i have over this is not capable of being put into words.

Okay - i suppose i ll quit preaching to the choir. We are trying to get a medical marijuana bill here in IL to a senate vote at the statehouse - so if and when i hear anything of import, Ill be sure to update. It may be a race (hopefully) between us and Michigan on who can claim the next spot on the list of states with legal medical access. Wish us luck, although to be honest, they are going by way of ballot intiative I believe and we are relying on legislators. I dont think i need to disclose who has the upper hand here. :)

Excellent post, Miss Green!

Excellent post, Miss Green! There are good guys on both sides of the aisle (Rep and Dem) on this one including Conyers, Barney Frank, and our beloved Ron Paul!

Thanks for posting, and thanks for the head's up!

I agree

There are great people on both sides of the aisle, however they're a minority and we need more. I urge everyone to run for state/local offices or support grassroot candidates in their efforts.

Truth is Spoken Here......

Coronado sums it ALL up with this two sentence statement. This is the only way to have a true revolution that will have a lasting effect. We must all join together to support our fellow women and men that have the ablility to become elected, get elected ourselves, and vote out the career ones that don't give 2 hoots. Use those meetups that have like minded people in them to network & to go beyond trying to get the good doctor elected to president.

THANK YOU Coronado......

great find

more or this kind of posts is what we need. great stuff.
eventually people should press on the real matter at hand, which is the fact that a plant is a plant is a plant and nobody should ever be punished for growing anything and using anything they grow in whatever way they like.
