John McCain Fundraiser vs Santa Barbara Meetups
Fear and Loathing in SB

By Johnathan Harker

Santa Barbara, California--A local Ron Paul Meetup Group engineered a last-minute protest against a John McCain fundraiser on Monday, causing a visibly embarrassed McCain to roll up his window. The Ron Paul Meetup members are claiming victory over McCain and his entourage of police motorcyclists.

"We bitch slapped McCain right in the face," brags a recent post. The Meetup.com comments read like giddy children eating ice-cream on a hot summer day. Another member tells his story of the first interaction of the day:

"McCain had his window rolled down and he looked at me with that stupid fake grin of his," says Troy Lucero who was holding a sign with the 'Peace' symbol on one side, and 'Ron Paul' on the other. Just as McCain's car approached, Lucero turned his sign around revealing his support still lied with the Congressmen from Texas. "Seeing the wince on [McCain's] face was absolutely priceless."

Troy Lucero came dressed in full costume as Hunter S. Thompson. When asked about the costume, Lucero cited it was in honor of his favorite political junkie. "[Thompson] was a great writer," he says fondly. "He had a way of pulling back the skin and revealing the real human beating heart..."

"I wish we would have caught that on video!" exclaimed an excited Jerry Matteo, who organized the event. "We got some pictures but nothing for YouTube, unfortunately."

Friendly protesters from the self-described progressive circles also managed to largely infiltrate the scene.1 Both groups claimed the event was difficult to penetrate but local media gave some credit where credit was due.2,3 Matteo reminds us never to doubt small committed groups of citizens to start making waves. "McCain definitely got our message."

Jerry Matteo is the recent founder of a "Ron Paul / Dennis Kucinich Meetup"4 and hopes to draw from all sides of the political spectrum. "It doesn't work that we judge our candidates by their party affiliation instead of actual issues. We need to break through the illusion of separation because we are obviously all on the same team here." It may offend a few die-hard supporters, but a Paul/Kucinich dream ticket could certainly help break through to the masses.5

A search for "Ron Paul" at meetup.com returns 45,000 results across the globe.6

Excellent article! I liked

Excellent article! I like your mock-journalist style. Hopefully, there's some more of these types of event to come in the future, cuz I'll be there! I just wish I got to see McCain's look on his face, that would have been priceless!
