Type of Content: Article Newt Gingrich sees the reality of the pending dissolution of the GOP. However, in this story Mr. Gingrich proposes “changes” that fall far short of rescuing the “GOP brand” as he calls it. The GOP has been killed by not being conservative, by having hypocritical jokers like Larry Craig and Tom Foley, by Bush and by subverting true-conservative principles for neoconservative ideology and liberalism parading as compassionate conservatism. One could go on for days as to why the GOP is dying, and it should if it does not really change. Gingrich shows how out of touch the entire GOP oligarchy is to what is needed to rescue the GOP. All of us know what, and more importantly, who can rescue the GOP. Read »

Gingrich tries to sell us the story, but neglects to tell us he is a CFR tool. The "contract with America" was likewise very smooth marketing. Too bad nothing came out of it. Abortion for example could have been ended immediately simply by taking the jurisdiction from the federal courts. Each state, read people, would have made their own decision. We do not need an amendment to stop the slaughter of the unborn. Now Gingrich has the dogs and ponies all dressed up in the center Circus circle and is trying to do the same thing. I don't buy it. Though to give him his due, a partial truth he is speaking is that conservative America has left the republican party in droves. What he stops short of saying is why. If and when he ever puts the blame where it should be: on the neocons, then he is only demogogueing. Sound and fury signifying nothing.
It is all about "branding" and winning. Same old same old. Nothing about restoring the republic to founding principles. Only about fixing the R brand. Crap.
Human Events, no less. What a neocon rag.
1. Repeal the gas tax for the summer, and pay for the repeal by cutting domestic discretionary spending.
I believe I heard the good doctor state this in an interview recently; however cutting global military spending as well as making military and social security payments tax free would be a big winner to me. This would be more of a real change then what the Newt advocated.
2. Redirect the oil being put into the national petroleum reserve onto the open market.
I would advocate opening up the coast and ANWR for drilling with environmental protection rules with a cap on 60 years. In 40 years, each year thereafter a 5 percent reduction of imports of foreign crude oil is made. The surplus money from the 5 percent a year could then be used to cut taxes on environmentally friendly technology as well as cut subsidies for the oil companies.
3,4 and 5 are just stupid ideas and the census shouldn't exist anyways.
6. Implement a space-based, GPS-style air traffic control system.
WTF does this have to do with real change!
7. Declare English the official language of government.
Agreed but the immigration issue is far more important and would take care of this issue.
8. Protect the workers' right to a secret ballot.
WTF does this have to do with real change as far as Taxes, the constitution, economic and foreign policy is concerned.
9. Remind Americans that judges matter.
How about Remind Americans the constitution matters.
I really used to like Newt, but the more I follow his work, the more I think that he is kind of a dud. I really like how schooled he is in history and I'd certainly take him over McCain in a split second. He's also a very talented debater and speaker. But he stands about shin-high to Ron Paul.
He came on strong with the corn ethanol thing as an actual resolution to the energy crisis. The people on his forums tore him apart.
Yeah. Real Change... he a pansy. Makes him sound like McHilbama and the rest of the fools. The only people brave enough to use the term Revolution are the only ones with a vision of a constitutional government in all of its glorious restraint and simplicity.
How do these "changes" address the issues underlying the Republican collapse? Except for oil prices and perhaps the matter of judges (of which more below), these are peripheral issues.
People have turned away from the Republicans because they treat the public like children, explaining their positions in simplistic, often dishonest terms: Al Qaeda is the monster under the bed and George Bush (now John McCain) is Santa Claus.
Some of Gingrich's proposals would probably do some good--releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, for instance.
"Remind Americans that Judges Matter" sounds like code for "stir up the abortion issue among the base." As abouthadit commented above, the abortion issue could be settled very quickly if the Republicans really wanted to settle it. But they don't. Abortion is very useful in driving their divisive politics (and equally useful to Democrats). The real reason judges matter to Gingrich and the neo-cons is that their favorite judges are complaisant regarding the imposition of the "national security" agenda so dear to their hearts. They are just as likely as any of their "liberal" colleagues to "legislate from the bench" when required to do so.
